Oh, have I ever been waiting for this one! I pretty much signed on from the moment I found out Kaitlin Olson was doing a new show. Then I found out Daniel Sunjata was on board, and so was I! And then I read the plot and saw the trailers and I couldn’t count down the days to this premiere fast enough. The pilot episode certainly didn’t disappoint. I set my expectations high and ABC rewarded those expectations with a pilot episode that blew me away! So keep reading for my High Potential 1×01 review!
More Than A Cleaner
High Potential 1×01 introduced us to Morgan who I knew from the trailers was going to be an impressive character. And how could she not be when Kaitlin Olson was cast to play her? But I was blown away even more than expected within the first ten minutes! Not only is she a badass mom and incredible cleaner, but the way her brain works and how she sees things is absolutely incredible. I also loved that the show didn’t waste any time getting right into things. Within the first ten minutes, Morgan was working with the police and using her magnificent brain to figure out what the other detectives missed during their investigation of the murder of the week.

Am I already rooting for Morgan and Adam? Uh, yeah, of course I am. If you have read any of my reviews of anything ever, you know that I’m all about the romance. Ships are my guilty pleasure whether it’s a book, movie, television series, or video game. I’m always looking for the love. So of course I am all in with Adam and Morgan. I was from the moment I watched the first trailer. But it’s more than that. I was immediately drawn to the characters and the premise and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes, professionally and personally. Because I’m also all about the character development and I am so eager to see how they develop.
Mysteries, Kids, and Cleaning
Morgan is such an enigma. I don’t think she’s going to be the type of character we ever stop learning things about. While her thought process reminds me of Will from Will Trent, Morgan has such a grit to her. She’s a single mom of three, which I wasn’t sure about when I first discovered that. I mean, how are three kids going to fit in with the premise of the series, especially when one of them is a baby? But it was clear with this first episode that it’s been worked in perfectly and I am excited to continue learning about the different sides of Morgan. I love that there are clearly so many sides to her and I am so curious how she grew up and what childhood looked like for her. And I hope we get to dive into that as the season goes on.
I appreciate that she doesn’t consider herself gifted, but more cursed. It’s part of what makes her real and relatable. She is a cleaning lady because it means she gets to work alone and doesn’t have to interact with people. Even though the way her brain works left her unable to walk away from the murder board without fixing it once she realized there had been a mistake, resulting in her having to interact with people more. But I think it will be good for her. It seems like she has spent a long time isolating herself from everyone except her kids. She has convinced herself that she isn’t capable of having normal relationships or being around people and having friends.
Partners?
Adam clearly had no interest in working with Morgan. He is a by the book kind of detective and Morgan is anything but. Which is exactly why I think they made the perfect team for this case and their future cases. Adam sees everything with his methods and serious investigation skills. But that unfortunately leaves gaps, and with the way Morgan’s brain works, she fills in those gaps. She doesn’t have investigation experience or skills and wouldn’t know a word out of the detective handbook. But she does see things differently and tells things how they are no matter how anyone else might feel about them. And I respect the hell out of that. So does Adam, even though he clearly didn’t want to admit it. If it hadn’t been for Morgan, I think it would have been possible for Adam to solve it but not as quickly.
