Oh, I was getting all the Baywatch vibes from this one! And that was just from the trailer. But luckily, the first episode did not disappoint! There are already so many things I want to see happen in the first season of this show and I’m already looking forward to it being renewed. Which is definitely a gamble, but after watching this first episode, I don’t know how they could do anything but renew it. It certainly has everything that I look for in a show and kept me hooked from start to finish. So keep reading for my Rescue: HI-Surf 1×01 review! And if you haven’t watched it yet, you need to.
All The Action and Then Some
Wow! The show just started and it already has all of the things. Even though I naturally expect there to be plenty of rescues, the way they are done is exceptional. I loved that we jumped right into things instead of taking a bunch of time to get to know the characters. It’s nice to learn things as we go instead of being given all of the backstory and then just going from there. I want there to be a little mystery into who each character is and what their lives look like together and apart. And there is definitely a whole lot of depth with these characters and the drama is very much going to be present. So it’s a good thing I’m here for it!

So we’re learning about all the different relationship dynamics and understanding everyone’s backgrounds. But there are also a lot of past emotions we’re clearly going to learn about along the way. There is the recent loss of the captain’s nephew, which we didn’t get to see happen, but are very much seeing what the fallout of that looks like. New recruits have been introduced which I think is nice because they are new to the scene like we are and getting to meet the established characters as we are. And there is also the discovery of a past relationship between Will and Em that I can’t freaking wait to get into! I want to know how they got together, how long they were together, and what exactly led to their breakup.
Undeniable Chemistry
I’ll be honest, I was rooting for Will and Emily before even watching. I saw them in the trailer and that was it, I was hooked. But finding out they dated previously and are no longer together was a nice twist I didn’t see coming. So color me intrigued, because now I’m desperate to know what happened between them and why the hell they broke up. The chemistry is still abundantly clear. And Laka clearly saw it as well and made it known to Will that he did. I absolutely loved him telling Will that breaking off an engagement was a lot easier than going through a divorce. Especially because he is not wrong about that. Whatever the reason was that Will and Emily broke up, the feelings are still clearly there. Which means any relationship they attempt to get into isn’t going to be fair to the other person.
But something else I love is that there seems to be a lot of chemistry everywhere. Besides the chemistry between Emily and Will, there is also the chemistry within the team. But I suppose that makes sense since they have to be able to trust one another when they are in the middle of a crisis. I just really enjoyed seeing the way Will, Emma, Laka, and Harlan all work together. And I’m excited to see the different dynamics Hina and Kainalu bring to the team. Especially Hina. She is a local and I feel like she has quite the stories about growing up there. And while Kainalu isn’t off to a good start, I am still intrigued by him. Speaking of Kainalu…
Already in Need of Redemption
I’m not sure how I feel about Kainalu at the moment but I don’t think I like him much. At least not yet. Not only did he take Hina’s spot on the team, but he got it unfairly and didn’t seem to care. Hina came in first and is also a local, she deserved that spot. It doesn’t matter that she ended up on the team later. But because his father is going to most likely be mayor, he has a lot of power and Kainalu didn’t seem to mind that he used that. I also feel he is in it for all the wrong reasons. He is looking for the action and all of the glory, not for the passion of it. Is it possible he’ll change? Sure. Or that I am reading into him wrongly? Also possible. But for now, I’m definitely not super keen on him.
