The second episode was coming in hot! Max and Ellis are kicking their partnership right into gear and are into their next case together. We have porch pirates, murder, scandals, some MMA, a Roomba messing up a crime scene, and so much more! Plus, the chemistry between Max and Ellis just keeps on getting hotter. At least, I think it does! So keep reading for my Wild Cards 1×02 review! And be sure to find us on socials to let us know what you thought of the episode and the show!
The Cons
Okay, I knew before I started this show that Max was a conwoman. But seriously? She is beyond impressive. Max seems able to literally insinuate herself into any situation and any character at any given moment. But more than that, she has something more than the typical con does. She actually cares and is genuinely empathetic. I think it’s clear that she doesn’t care what walk of life someone comes from. Because if they are guilty, she’s going to come at them until she gets the information and proof she needs to help Ellis arrest them. And if they aren’t, she is able to show them so much genuine kindness and is so caring toward them that she’s a delight to watch.

Even if he doesn’t like to admit it, I think that Ellis is going to have to start admitting to just how impressive he thinks Max is. I mean, it’s clear that he is impressed by his facial expressions or the little smirk he gets when he looks at Max after she does something clever. But that could also just be him reacting to the blatant sexual tension between the two of them. Or him not being able to resist her charm. Because it’s been clear since her first moment on screen, that Max and charming go hand in hand and she has it in spades.
The Mystery
The world of sports is an intense one and that is made abundantly clear when a sports agent is murdered. I thought this was going to be more of a comedy case than a serious one. And I thought it was going to be all about a porch pirate. But when it so quickly took a turn and there were so many freaking suspects, I was drawn in. A lot. I think I assumed this entire series was going to be more comedy. And while it does have comedy, it definitely borders more on drama. With a healthy dash of action thrown in. And I’m here for it! There was so much drama happening with affairs, competition, money, secrets, and so much more that I genuinely didn’t know who the killer was until it was completely revealed.
I know there was a lot going on with the mystery of the week. But I think that Max is a mystery as well. There is so much unknown about her and I think it was really nice that we were able to learn a little more about her. I want to know more about her childhood and her relationship with her parents. Also, can I add that I am absolutely in love with the fact that Jason Priestley is playing Max’s father?! Because I am so in love with that fact. I hope that we get to see him so much more throughout this season and the next as long as we are renewed. Which hopefully, we get that news sooner rather than later.
Character Chemistry
I cannot express enough how much I am absolutely obsessed with the chemistry between Max and Ellis. But more than that, I feel like we aren’t going to have to wait as long for these two to make some moves toward each other as we do for so many shows. I don’t think there is going to be a slow burn happening here! At least, I hope not. Because I would love to see Max and Ellis get together sooner rather than later. Is that an early hope since this is only the second episode? Yes. But honestly, it’s the fault of the writers for tossing this possibility out there so early on. I mean, we already got the fake kiss where both characters were a little more into it than they needed to be. Because the chemistry is real!
