Wild Cards 1x01

‘Wild Cards’ 1×01 Review: “The Infinity Thief”

We are back, people! Now that our favorite shows are beginning to return and new shows are making their debuts, we are so ready to jumpstart our coverage! We have missed being in this groove and figured a great way to kick our coverage season of would be with this new show. From the second I saw the trailer for Wild Cards, I was in. The plot and cast was just too good to pass up. And the first episode certainly didn’t disappoint! While it didn’t feel like the case was all that interesting, I think that was intentional. We needed to get a jumpstart on getting to know the characters, their motivations, and their backgrounds. And I think it worked out really well! So keep reading for my Wild Cards 1×01 review!

New Team on the Block

Max is a pretty successful conwoman. Or so it seems. Because, you know, she does get caught not too far into the beginning of the episode. But she did get herself out of it almost as fast. Plus, it was the setup needed to introduce her to Cole. Who can clearly use a friend. Or someone on his side. Okay, he can pretty much use anyone who is going to assist him even the slightest bit. Even if she is clearly going to drive him crazy. But from the way he reacted to the kiss they shared, and yes we got a kiss in the very first episode, Cole definitely is going to enjoy being driven crazy by Max. At least a little bit. Which he showed by saving her ass at the end of the episode when he definitely didn’t have to.

Even if the officers and their superiors didn’t want to admit it, and they clearly didn’t want to admit it, Max definitely has the necessary skills to catch criminals. Especially considering that she is a bit of one herself. And while I don’t condone it, I don’t think she has done anything as bad as the people she and Cole were teaming up to catch. And what a team they made! I’ll admit that I was completely invested in the relationship between Cole and Max. That was before I even began the first episode. Honestly, all it took was watching the trailer to see the chemistry between them. But the journey of their partnership and relationship is clearly going to be fun!

Not So Silent Consultant

Cole definitely plays everything by the book. And while that should be something that’s admirable, it seems to be a big part of why he hasn’t been respected in his position the way he deserves. He makes it clear he isn’t happy with his demoted position along with where he would like to be. But I got the distinct impression that when he was in front of his boss with Max, that was the first time he had attempted to get the position he wants. Or even display some serious motivation to get involved with something outside his current position to try and move up.

So that tells me that already Max was doing something for him that he didn’t realize he needed. She gave him a push to go after something. Along with some much needed motivation. And despite her casual attitude and approach to everything, I think she felt pretty great about being on the right side of things for once. She can use the skills she’s learned over the years in ways that don’t land her in jail. And wouldn’t that be the best of both worlds? Being able to use her skills to do good, that’s got to help her feel just as motivated to help Cole. Unless of course she is playing everyone like that last clip made it seem. I guess only time will tell!

One Case Down, So Many More to Go

Despite their many differences, approaches, tactics, and skills, Max and Cole were able to figure things out and catch their thief and murderer. And this is obviously just the start of this new partnership and I am so here for it. So if you’re a fan of Castle, Bones, The Mentalist, or Psych, then you are definitely going to be fan of this one and I already can’t recommend it enough. So if you didn’t get a chance to watch the series premiere live, I definitely suggest checking it out before the next episode airs. Because I don’t think this is going to be a series you want to miss.
