“I am left with my hunger. A feeling like my stomach is eroding…and I follow my hunger into the wood.”
– Lestat
The finale dives into the past, albeit in a disastrous and bloody way. Lestat is forced to reckon with his maker and fledglings and possibly failing them and himself. Louis is forced to address his failed relationship with Armand, not that he has a choice. The Failures comes to a close as both vampires teeter on the brink of death.

A Seat at the Table
Heads rolled. While Louis’s head and body were taken to a butcher shop by Armand, only Lestat’s body went to the butcher. Daniel took his head for a day out bowling, where Alex and Talamasca came for a game. We weren’t surprised that Daniel caved the way he did when it came to returning Lestat’s head. He’s been unhappy with his vampire life, and we weren’t surprised that he had expected Lestat to fix it somehow or show him a better life. He threw a tantrum just like Armand.

Stuck between life and death while his head took a day trip, Lestat found himself at a dinner table. It was a place he knew he’d eventually come to, and it looked an awful lot like the one he grew up at as a boy. Here, put on a timer, Lestat was presented to his maker, fledglings, and what this season has culminated to: his failures. His maker, Magnus, along with Gabriella, Louis, and even TC, continuously prodded at him about what made him a dreadful vampire.

Spite on a Pike
While Lestat was dealing with his inner turmoil of guilt and failure, Louis was in a sticky situation. His head was perched on a butcher’s pike across from his body. It was a surprisingly grisly thing for Armand to do out of spite.
While Armand demanded that Louis repent for hurting him, we noticed a familiar figure in the background. Though the figure was blurry and never officially shown, the way he slouched and watched on as Armand tormented Louis was familiar. Could that be Alex’s brother, Larry, in the background, helping Armand with his spiteful endeavors? We think so.

Do Revenge
And if Larry potentially being alive wasn’t thrilling enough —because let’s be honest, we’re not surprised Armand pulled this stunt — Regina was pulled from the walk-in freezer. Duct-taped to an office chair, she was a hot mess, not that we can blame her. Vampire business is not only theatrical, but in many cases, bloody.
Armand went on to reveal that he’d been watching Louis connect with her from afar. In fact, he set the entire thing up. This was the major plot twist for us. We knew Regina was conning Louis, but we didn’t know it was at Armand’s request.
Louis has taken beating after beating this season, and the only one that hasn’t put him down was Lestat. While this could’ve very easily been the last straw for Louis, he pulled himself together (metaphorically) and told Armand what we’ve all said this season. Get over it. He was gentler about it, but he managed to break through to Armand. Yes, both Lestat and Louis hurt Armand, but Armand knew better.
The plot twists around Armand’s final confrontation with Louis were inventive but not shocking. His ploys with Regina and that Larry might be his latest fledgling were absolutely bonkers, however.

The Failures
The final few minutes of the episode follow Lestat in what he believed were his last few minutes. He was sure this was his end, especially because he was faced with every person he’d ever killed and Louis’s brother. Louis’s brother appearing left us sniffling emotionally. Many people have been demanding and cruel and judgmental with Lestat. Not many have ever said thank you. Louis’s brother, Paul, sat with Lestat, quenching his loneliness in these last few minutes and said thank you for loving Louis in the way he deserved. We were as distraught over this moment as we were over Claudia’s ghost.
It was Gabriella and Alex that not only reunited Louis and Lestat with their bodies but with each other. Together, the two were in agreement that the final concert that waited for Lestat with thousands of vampires and humans just couldn’t happen. While Gabriella tried to be insistent, Lestat finally stood his ground with his mother…at least we hoped so.
She. Is. The. Answer.
Lestat’s final moments on The Failures brought us back to the present. As he spoke, he walked out onto his apartment balcony to see the last glimpses of sun and a destroyed city. We’re assuming a lot of the world looks like Montreal with Akasha back in power, but what did this mean for human and vampire-kind?
While we know that Louis and Armand are alive, what about Daniel and the band? Gabriella?
We’re excited to be expecting a new season of ‘The Vampire Chronicles’, which will be taking on the title of the third book: Queen of the Damned. We’re even more excited that Sheila Atim will be reprising her role as Akasha.
