'Rescue: HI-Surf' 1x05

‘Rescue: HI-Surf’ 1×05 Review: “XXL”

I definitely did not want to be in the team’s shoes in this episode. Having to keep track of all those surfers on some seriously dangerous waves was so not my idea of a good time. But things went from bad to worse to dangerous so freaking quick. Things were intense from start to finish. I was still recovering from one rescue when another one was underway! So be prepared to barely catch your breath in this episode! And if this is the front half of the season, I have no idea what to expect with the back half! So keep reading for my Rescue: HI-Surf 1×05 review!

Dangerous Waters

I know that the dangerous swells were listed as being okay for advanced surfers. But I have to admit that I didn’t love the idea of Em and Jenn being out there. I know Em is a bad ass lifeguard and Jenn can handle herself too. Yet, that didn’t have me feeling better. Plus, I was with Adam that it was weird for Em to have a day off. Also, was it just me or did Adam look worried about Em going out on the water? Though I do love the friendship between Emily and Jenn. They make the perfect daredevil duo and I am definitely here for it. As usual, Laka and Will made a kickass team too. But that is to be expected with these two. I also appreciate that everyone on the team volunteered to stick around past their shifts. Even knowing overtime wasn’t happening.

That last wave had me very nervous. And I felt like the look on Emily’s face implied that she was nervous about it too. Which was clearly that gut instinct of hers coming in clutch because a rescue was necessary. I don’t know why this show always seems to need to make me emotional. But they definitely did it again with this episode. Not only was I upset about Rocky being lost, but I was also devastated for Hina. I know that it’s inevitable for every rescue to go well or to even happen, but she is so early in her career. Her devastation was palpable from the moment she lost hold of Rocky. And Sonny’s reaction to it just wasn’t right in my book. I definitely think it was yet another example of his untreated grief coming out in his work.

Different Struggles

Kainalu was definitely being torn in different directions in this episode. Between his dad and his events and wanting to be an active part of the dangerous swells. But I think we all knew what task was going to win out. Especially when he discovered what his dad’s important event actually was. And his dad seemed to know which he would choose even if he wasn’t directly giving Kainalu an option. So it came as no surprise to me that his dad acted like a complete dick about the situation and tried to use everything he provides Kainalu as leverage. Yeah, definitely understanding why Kainalu was a bit of an entitled jerk in the beginning. But he is definitely growing with this team and I am actually kind of proud of him.

Hina has been maintaining a good head for crisis from the first episode. But this was a very different situation and it had her a little on the anxious side. I appreciated that she was honest with Sonny about feeling a little fearful about how dangerous the waters were. Though I still feel like Sonny should have been a little gentler on her. I know that she lost a rescue but I don’t think it was for a lack of giving it her all. It wasn’t a mindless screw up. The waters were dangerous and the rescue was intense. And it also wasn’t her first rescue of the day. And I thought Emily was totally justified in how she told Sonny of. I also kind of loved the way Kainalu comforted Hina. Even without knowing what happened.

School or Surf

It was actually really surprising to me that Sonny didn’t give Ocean and her boyfriend a harder time. I was actually stuck between whether I should be proud of him or not. Because I understand that he’s trying to give her some space. And apparently her mother knew where she was and what she was doing and was cool with it. So I’m sure he was also doing his best not to undermine her. But I’m sure it went against all his instincts to do it. And I don’t think I would have been against him giving her a hard time since she probably should have been in school. Although, it was a really nice moment when Ocean hugged her dad and thanked him for saving her boyfriend. I can appreciate that the two of them needed that moment.
