Things are continuing to operate at warp speed around here! Everyone seems bound and determined for Ellen to be married. Either by arranging it or ruining her to leave her with only one option. Then we have Julia who is trying to hide her pregnancy or risk having her baby taken from her. So she makes a not so easy decision that I just know she is going to end up regretting forever. And Ellen makes her own decisions to keep the power of her marriage in her own hands. As it should be. So keep reading for my Outlander: Blood of My Blood 1×03 review! And remember, spoilers abound if you haven’t watched the episode yet.
Just A Dream
Things were more than just a little romantic between Ellen and Brian only to realize that it was just a dream from Ellen. And what a dream it was. Whew! Unfortunately, Ellen got more than just a rude awakening from her maid whipping her curtains open. She was also informed that she would be marrying Malcolm Grant. So lovely to be told who you will be marrying and have it be such a surprise to you. Jeez, it seems like Colum is really moving into telling Ellen what she will be doing and how. But I knew that this woman wasn’t just going to go along with whatever was told to her. Nah, she’s too witty and stubborn for that.

It seemed like everyone was trying to use Ellen as a pawn and it was frustrating at hell. Dougal agreed that he would get rid of Colum’s arranged marriage if he was in charge. But then she finds out from someone else that it’s only because he will arrange her marriage to someone else. Then there is Murtagh who is totally okay with Ellen’s reputation being absolutely destroyed because if the other men don’t want her any longer, he could end up her last option. Oy vey. Honestly, these boys calling themselves men are making it real easy to prefer Brian in just about every aspect. I don’t think he would ever try to control, own, or tell Ellen what she should be doing.
Ellen Saves Her Future
Does Ellen remind anyone else of Merida? “I’ll be shooting for my own hand”. That’s all I could think of as she worked her way around her brothers and figured it out. And not only did she figure it out despite all of the obstacles being presented to her, but she figured it out in a way that allowed the boys to keep their dignity. Well, what little they had left of it anyway. She wasn’t interested in getting credit for finding what I think is the best possible solution. Nope, she is just fighting to be left the hell alone. Stop trying to marry this girl off for your own gains and start respecting her opinion the same way your father did! There was clearly a reason he did so.
I’m glad we don’t have to keep worrying about Dougal and Colum fighting over who is going to be in charge. And I think that the solution clearly worked. Which I say while trying not to make callbacks to the OG show that shows us how well this arrangement will continue to work over the years. Colum owning to his strengths in ruling and making major decisions. But deferring to Dougal for the battle side of things. Well done, Ellen, well done. And the fact that it was so easily accepted by everyone else present was just the icing on the cake.
To Be or Not to Be… Pregnant
As far as our other couple, they still haven’t found their way back to each other clearly. And it doesn’t even look like they are close to doing so to be honest. But Julia’s got other problems as Davina suggests that she knows Julia is pregnant and she better take care of it herself. Because if she doesn’t, Simon will. Of course, Julia insists that Davina is wrong and she isn’t pregnant. But it’s pretty clear the other woman doesn’t believe her and I’m just yelling at my screen for her to get the heck out of here! Even though she says at the end that there is no way that can happen and sleeps with nasty Simon so he will think the baby is his. Gross. She seemed to have an ally in Brian and I wish she would have tried to use that. I’m certain he would’ve helped.
