Outlander: Blood of My Blood 1x02

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ 1×02 Review: “S.W.A.K. (Sealed with a Kiss)

While the first episode gave us a close look at Brian and Ellen with a glimpse of Julia and Henry, it seems this episode switched things up! And it has me wondering of how the format of the episodes is going to continue. Are we going to get one episode to focus on one couple with a glimpse of the other? Or are we going to start getting them evenly mixed? I certainly have no idea. But I am looking forward to how they decide to proceed with it. So let’s get into it! Keep reading for my Outlander: Blood of My Blood 1×02 review!

Back and Forth in Time

I loved that we got to focus on Julia and Henry in this episode. And i also loved that their story resembles Jamie and Claire’s much more than I realized. The flashbacks to Henry in the war show where Claire got half of her resilience and bravery as Henry didn’t hesitate to save one of his men. Despite it being against the orders he was given. As for Julia and Henry meeting, I think it’s really beautiful that they met each other through letters before ever seeing one another face to face. But despite the distance, their chemistry came through each letter and it was no surprise that when they did finally meet, the sparks were flying off the charts.

The way that Julia is able to support Henry through his PTSD is hauntingly and heartbreakingly beautiful. And I think they did an incredible job showing just some of the realities of war and how it affects those in it even after it’s over. The fact that Julia reciting what she wrote in her letters to him calms him? SWOON! Right from the jump, these two were fully involved with one another and ready to support each other any way they could. Talk about true love. And if that isn’t something right out of Jamie and Claire’s book, I don’t know what is.

Getting Deja Vu

As much trouble as I know it brings, I really loved Julia going back in time through the stones just like Claire. But I also really loved the added bonus of Henry being able to come through after her. A little late, you know, since by that point Julia had already been knocked out. And sold. The fact that Brian and Julia meet had me so excited and giddy. And also wishing so desperately that Jamie and Claire could somehow discover that they knew each other. Because how freaking amazing would that be?! Anyway, I digress. Back to the nightmare of time travel for Julia and Henry.

While Julia is having a terrible time, Henry isn’t faring much better. The guy almost got thrown in a well for handing out business advice. But things did end up seemingly okay for him after being hired as the new advisor. Except that it’s for the Grants and I’m not so sure that’s going to go so well. The letters do have me wondering if there is a possibility for them to be found by Claire at some point. Because I just can’t get over what an incredible thing that would be for her to discover. Especially considering the way Brian did his best to protect Julia. In some ways, parts of this felt very familiar. And yet, there were so many ways it differed, proving that the show has the capabilities to forge its own path going forward.

Long Journeys Ahead

If everyone has ended up in the same time period, then perhaps the back and forth won’t come into play as much as I thought it would. But I am curious as to what will happen once Julia and Henry are reunited while also being friends with Brian and Ellen, which will inevitably be happening I think. And if they are reunited quickly but unable to return, I can only imagine all of the trouble and adventures the four of them are going to be having together. These first two episodes certainly threw a lot of information at us in a short amount of time. But once the show is able to get its footing and we can settle in with who all the characters are and how things are playing out, I think it’s truly going to be excellent.
