‘High Potential’ 1×03 Review: “Dirty Rotten Scoundrel”

This episode kept the hits coming as Adam, Morgan, and the rest of the team investigated the murder of a man that was living all the lives. He seemed to have many mistresses and was conning woman after woman. All while having a family at home that had no idea what he was doing. So that was great. Plus we had Morgan and Adam getting into a bit of a tiff that ended with Morgan walking away and saying she was done. But that wasn’t the only fight she had in this episode as she and Ludo also got into it. And Selena seemed to be getting somewhere with looking into the disappearance of Ava’s father. So keep reading for my High Potential 1×03 review!

Never Quitting

So the argument between Adam and Morgan was definitely brewing for a while. But as weird as it sounds, I think it was a good thing. They have a lot of tension between them and have from the moment they first met. This has been building. They haven’t offered each other a lot of understanding for their different skills and how those skills are crucial for solving cases. The approaches are different but together they are what get things solved. So I think the disagreement needed to happen so that they felt compelled to hear one another out. And they needed to vent some of their frustrations. I would have only been upset about it if they hadn’t patched things up in the end.

Morgan and Adam bring something different to the investigative table. Their skills fit together perfectly and everyone but them seem to be able to see it. While I love the way Morgan sees things and picks up on what others don’t, I think it’s also really good for her to see that Adam has a way of seeing things she can’t. I think she’s used to being the only one in the room that sees things differently. So it’s nice to see her surprised by what Adam is able to see as well. I never for a moment thought that she would actually quit for any length of time. She is way too passionate about this job.

Victims and Rules

I know Eduardo was the victim. But damn, the guy was also a complete jerk. Scamming poor Glenda who was losing her memory? How low can a guy go. And the fact that he had a whole operation going that he just kept scamming these women? Disgusting. Add in that he had a wife and child at home that were convinced he was out and traveling for work and my sympathy went out the window just a bit. Did he deserve to get murdered? Well, no. But I definitely wasn’t all about vengeance for him. Or cheering when Kyle was arrested for the murder. He didn’t handle it right, clearly and definitely should have gone to the police before killing a man. But I get that he was trying to defend his mom and get her money back.

The case presented an interesting perspective for sure. And it really highlighted how Adam and Morgan handle cases. And evidence. Which we learned that Morgan isn’t so great at. She did a good job looking deeper than the cops at the evidence, but perhaps shouldn’t have brought it all home. Or let Elliot look at it. Just for future reference, maybe. She may not agree with all of the rules but Adam made some good points for why they exist. And I do think it was a good thing for Morgan and Ludo to get into it as well about rules and boundaries. Partially because Ava having a boy in her room with the door closed is perhaps not the best idea. But also because Morgan needed to be confronted with the fact that she walks away when things get rough. She argues and she leaves.

Fitting In and Standing Out

Despite her moment of quitting, I liked that Morgan has kind of officially and fully become part of the team. And it was nice to be able to see more of Daphne and Oz getting involved and playing their parts. They obviously get along with Morgan just fine. And I love seeing the developing relationships. Morgan deserves to have good friendships, especially because she feels like the way she sees and thinks about things has ruined all of the relationships she has had in the past. But I’m a firm believer that she just wasn’t spending her time with the right kind of people. Ones who would accept and appreciate her for who she is. Which this team clearly does. Even Adam.
