9-1-1 is back and better than ever! After a long hiatus and a movie to a different network, the hit show starring Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, and Jennifer Love Hewitt returned with an episode that will lead into one of the biggest disasters the show has seen. And they have seen plenty!
Throughout the episode, we see that Athena is nervous about the cruise. While she told therapist Frank, who we have seen previously with characters such as Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), her fear stems from a movie she watched as a child, there’s more to it. Deep down, Athena is worried about facing alone time with Bobby when there is no action and chaos in their lives.
A cruise to remember

While on their cruise, Athena and Bobby run into some familiar faces. Back in season 2, we met Lola and Norman Peterson in less-than-ideal circumstances. Lola was trying to get her husband to notice her and caused an entire freeway to stop while wearing a robe and showing a banner asking Norman to see her.
Athena isn’t too keen on seeing them, but she uses their presence as an excuse to avoid Bobby. Just when they are going to talk, they find that Lola is nowhere to be seen and Norman has strange scratches on his neck.
She is sure that Norman harmed Lola, especially once they see another woman is using Lola’s ID to scan through locations on the ship. But eventually, they learn that Lola had been abducted after they were assumed to be a retired couple with lots of money.
Before Athena and Bobby can figure out how to find Lola, especially with the ship turning back to Los Angeles, they hear gunfire and see pirates onboard the ship. With the ship being taken over, how will they get home?
Eddie asks Buck to help with Christopher

In the meantime, the rest of the team was focused on saving lives while also dealing with their personal lives. Buck mentioned that he and Natalia, the girl he began seeing at the end of season 6, broke up. The topic of death got a little old for him. But we’re glad he saw that it was better not to be in a relationship that focused on the saddest aspect of life.
Eddie is still seeing Marisol while tackling his son, Christopher’s, dating life. He is dating not one, but several girls. He enlists Buck’s help to talk to Christopher, since he is a “reformed player.” It’s nice to see they are acknowledging that Buck is moving past his old dating habits.
Of course, the underlying truth of the matter is that Christopher has a skewed view of relationships. This is due to his mom leaving when he was younger. He’s also unable to even remember little things about her, like her voice.
Eddie, having listened to his son talking to Buck, decides to give Christopher a letter Shannon wrote years ago. The letter helps Christopher to get a sense of where his mom was coming from. It was a way to allow himself to find his way to move forward.
It was a great scene that showcased how Christopher is growing up and how the grief of losing a parent can manifest in different ways. Buck was able to be a bridge in helping Eddie gain an understanding of what was going on so he could help his son.
Maddie and Chimney dating?

Another amazing storyline was Maddie and Chimney, who was struggling with worrying about the future after a call. He saw a couple that grew to hate each other, and he didn’t want that for him and Maddie. So he asked her to go on multiple date nights. But while one call scared him, another one made him see reason. This call saw a couple’s moment of intimacy interrupted by an emergency mid-intercourse. They had been trying to reconnect with too many activities. Chimney realized pushing things could also hurt his own relationship.
Ultimately, Maddie and Chimney have always worked together in the best way. They don’t need to try hard just to be together. Maddie and Chimney are truly one of the best couples on the show. They have a beautiful little girl and are planning their wedding! Together, they can just be themselves.
We are looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store! 9-1-1 season 7 truly packed a punch in the first episode on ABC. The episode hit on all the relationships we love on the show. It felt like a missing puzzle piece slotted back into place.
9-1-1 airs on ABC on Thursdays at 8/7c. Make sure to watch the next day on Hulu.
