‘9-1-1’ 7×07 Recap: “Ghost of a Second Chance”

9-1-1 has surprised us in so many ways in season 7 and now we have a major one involving one Eddie Diaz. But first, we have to welcome a new guest star in the form of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Known for roles on The Cosby Show and The Resident, the talented actor made his debut on the show as a man named Amir who is connected to Bobby. Find out what happened in our recap of 9-1-1 7×07, “Ghost of a Second Chance.”

A call affects Maddie

Maddie took a dispatch call that ended up affecting her deeply. A woman called, pretending to be calling a hotel to get help. She’s in a car with, who appears to be, her husband and baby. But before help can arrive, they get into a car accident.

The 118 is dispatched to the accident site and the car is on fire. The woman, Catherine, is inside, but the baby and man are gone. As she fights for her life in the burn unit, Athena investigates the accident.

Consumed with lingering feelings of guilt over not recognizing what was happening in the call, Maddie checks on Catherine. It’s here she meets Amir (Warner), a nurse who also has scars on his face from being burned. He is taking care of Catherine and allows Maddie to visit her.

After listening to the 911 call with Athena and Detective Romero, Maddie realizes she read the call wrong. She thought the man was Catherine’s husband, but they still don’t know how they know each other.

At home, Maddie continues to listen for clues when her husband joins her. Chimney is worried about her, since she knows what it’s like to have someone stalking her. Once they both listen to it, they realize that the man knew something about Catherine that he shouldn’t.

Athena and Detective Romero eventually figure out that the man had been stalking Catherine. They get in touch with his sister, who reveals that his wife left him with their child.

He’s now at a nearby park to locate a new mom for the baby, Chloe. But when the police catch up to him, he ends up getting hit and the 118 comes to their aid.

He tries to escape with the baby, but Chimney recognizes his voice and Buck tackles him before he can flee.

Bobby takes the baby back to her mother, where Amir sees him for the first time. It’s clear that upon seeing the man, he recognizes him. Because of the burns, we suspect this has to do with the fire in Minnesota that killed 148 people, including Bobby’s family. Now we’re intrigued to find out how Amir will handle coming face to face with Bobby after 10 years.

Searching for family

Hen and Karen’s story revolved around trying to learn more about their new daughter, Mara. They discovered thanks to Denny that she had a little brother named Tyson. He had already been placed with his biological father, so at some point, Mara became separated from him.

They both went to meet with with Tyson’s parents, but it looked like the dad didn’t want to disrupt his son’s life. Plus, he may not even remember his family since he was so young. It looks like they do get a chance to have Tyson come see his sister, but the dad is not involved from what we can see. This may not turn out as well as Karen and Hen hoped. But they are trying to help Mara.

We’re always so excited to see Hen and Karen being a family and learn and grow together. So whatever happens with this new development with their family is sure to be a learning curve for them and make them stronger than ever.

Eddie has a Ghost of a Second Chance

Eddie. Oh Eddie. Where do we begin with you? The episode began with him appearing to be happy with Marisol and Christopher. They even play a silly game and learn Marisol has never had smore’s. This is important to note since this was an activity Christopher partook in with his mother, Shannon.

While they are out and about, Eddie sees a woman in a shop who looks similar to Shannon. It’s enough to make him stop in his tracks and take another glance at her. When he does, she offers to help him find something in the shop. He has glimpses of Shannon, even flashing back at one point to a trip on the beach when he smells a candle.

Shannon’s ghost has always been present in Eddie’s life. He has mentioned wanting to find the magic he had with her again. But from the flashbacks we saw, it appears Eddie is romanticizing his relationship with her. It wasn’t always romantic. They were messy and had a hard time, culminating in Shannon wanting a divorce.

But for Eddie, who has always wanted to find that connection again and provide Chris with a mother, this woman, Kim, is a way to start over again with his late wife. He leaves Christopher with Buck, who thinks he’s going on a date with Marisol.

In actuality, Eddie is on a date with Kim. She might look similar to Shannon, but she isn’t her. It’s clear that Eddie is in over his head, and the romanticization he has put on his marriage will end up destroying him before he can blink.

We’re always rooting for Eddie to get the help he needs, but how can he when he is lying to everyone he loves, including his son, best friend, and girlfriend? Now that Kim has been added to the mix, it adds another layer to the lies that Eddie has built in going after something that never truly existed.

Our thoughts on 9-1-1 7×07 Ghost of a Second Chance

Overall, we’re looking forward to seeing the arc between Bobby and Amir. However it plays out, we expect that the promo is a red herring. But we’re so excited to see Peter Krause bringing his A-game to this arc that has been a long time coming since the first season.

Buck and Chimney may not have had a lot going on. But in the scenes they had, they were the cool glass of water we needed on a raging hot day. We absolutely loved the small moment of them working side-by-side to save the baby. Humbly, we ask ABC for more of this dynamic duo!

Maddie and Chimney remain the best couple on the show besides Hen and Karen and Bobby and Athena. Plus, Jee-Yun getting a special ritual to help with bad dreams? Maddie is the best mom!

Eddie’s arc is one that we did not see coming, but now that it’s here, we’re along for the ride. It’s going to be messy and painful. But if it ends in Eddie finally letting go of the past and letting the ghosts rest, then we’re looking forward to how Ryan Guzman plays this.

9-1-1 airs on ABC Thursdays at 8/7c. You can catch up on previous episodes on Hulu.
