‘9-1-1’ 7×06 recap: Chimney and Maddie’s wedding day arrives

The 9-1-1 wedding event of the season finally came and it ended up being one of the best episodes of the season. After years of love, heartbreak, endurance, and determination, Maddie and Chimney’s big day arrived. But in true 9-1-1 fashion, not everything went smoothly. Find out what happened on 9-1-1 7×06, “There Goes the Groom.”

A bachelor party to remember

We all know what Buck is like when he gets excited about doing something. He was determined to plan the perfect bachelor party for Chimney, despite his new brother-in-law’s objections. However, like everyone who loves Buck, he couldn’t say no to him.

Buck had everything down perfectly, from the karaoke bar location to delicious sliders, and the theme. They were doing an 80’s theme, with Buck dressed as Crockett from Miami Vice. Although according to Eddie, he was Crockett and Buck was Tubbs. We think he got confused looking at images for the costumes.

Joining them was Buck’s new beau Tommy, who didn’t dress up, but only because he was on call for work. Even though Hen and Karen arrived, Chimney was nowhere to be found. Eventually, the ladies left and Tommy got called into work.

Even though Chimney didn’t show up, Eddie and Buck ended up partying with a group of other partygoers. The party moved to Chimney’s hotel room where they thought he was just sleeping. But as our hungover best friends found out the next day, he was not there. Chimney was missing the entire night.

Maddie looks for her groom

After discovering Chimney was missing, Maddie was determined to find her groom. Dressed to the nines in her gorgeous wedding dress, she went to dispatch to check security footage of her missing husband-to-be.

Chimney had been seen earlier in the episode when he was in his vehicle, confused and lost. A “bystander” appeared to help him, but stole his car. Personally, if Maddie ever comes across him, we give her permission to deck him.

Seeing his phone in the road, Chimney had gone to grab it before getting on a crosstown bus to go to work. But Hen, seeing the footage with Maddie, was confused since that bus didn’t go to the firehouse.

Maddie was devastated, thinking marrying her was stressing him out. However, Hen shut that down, telling Maddie the only thing that calmed him was the knowledge they’d be married.

Memory loss hits Chimney

As the team searched for Chimney, they learned he attempted to go to the old karaoke bar where he worked almost 20 years ago. Maddie was confused about how he lost his memories. Hen remembered a call they were recently on, where a guy stuck in a vent had apparently forgotten that his fiancee was now his ex-wife.

Chimney had gone into the ventilation shaft and was talking with the guy the whole time. Along with the fact that she had seen Chimney appear to be hallucinating on the bus, she called the hospital to find out the man’s condition.

All of this occurred as Chimney was hallucinating visions of Doug’s, Maddie’s abusive ex-husband. Doug was basically the devil on his shoulder, luring him towards death.

While Buck and Eddie brought necessities for Maddie, Hen found out what happened to the man they were helping. He had been diagnosed with viral encephalitis after traveling in Central America. Chimney was the closest to him and was apparently infected. In fact, Chimney had complained of headaches but chalked it up to wedding nerves and the bachelor party.

Chimney is who he is

Even though Chimney was lost and confused, his instincts as a paramedic never left him. When a car drove through a farmer’s market, Chimney began triaging everyone before disappearing. Bobby, Athena, Buck, and Eddie went to the location. They learned that while Chimney had his instincts for helping people, he still thought he was back in 2005.

The team split up to search, Buck desperately calling his name. Chimney was asleep behind a building and Buck never saw him. But Chimney spotted his brother-in-law and flashes of Maddie and Jee began to appear in his mind.

Unfortunately, the ghost of Doug continued to haunt him, telling him to close his eyes and accept death. But before he was lost forever, another ghost came to protect Chimney.

Before the party, the Lees and Chimney held a memorial dinner for Kevin Lee. They had called onto his spirit in his memory. His spirit returned to guide Chimney back to living and towards home. It was a powerful moment that helped Chimney get back to the Lees, who immediately called 911 when he finally collapsed.

A wedding to remember

Now at the hospital, Chimney woke up to Maddie at his beside. Maddie was preparing herself for him not to remember her. But he dispelled that when he apologized for missing the wedding. Maddie was thrilled, and they reunited with their daughter, who excitedly ran in to see her parents.

Chimney told Maddie he didn’t want to wait another minute to marry her. So with Bobby officiating, and their closest family and friends present, they finally married.

The song playing over the scene was “Islands in the Stream,” which Maddie and Chimney sang together back in season 2. Plus, it was sung by 9-1-1’s very own Jennifer Love Hewitt.

It was an incredible ceremony, even though we wish Buck had walked her down the aisle. Speaking of Buck, he got his own romantic moment as well.

When Tommy showed up a little bit late after fighting a “beast” of a fire, Buck gave him one heck of a kiss. Because of how dirty Tommy was from soot, it transferred to Buck’s face. It pretty much gave away to everyone where he had gone after the ceremony.

While everyone was happy for him but slightly surprised, Hen told Karen “It’s about damn time.” Hen, we need to know what you knew.

Our thoughts on the 9-1-1 wedding

All in all, this was one of the best episodes that 9-1-1 has aired. Kenneth Choi truly stole the show despite sharing the moment with Jennifer Love Hewitt as his lovely bride. It was a heartfelt episode that ended with Maddie and Chimney tied together.

We did love that at the end, it appeared Chimney forgot why he got his own nickname. Honestly, if we never find out the reason, it would be iconic. We’re looking forward to what the rest of the season has to offer.

9-1-1 airs on ABC Thursdays at 8/7c. You can catch up on previous episodes on Hulu.
