USA Network definitely owed us a show. At least as far as I can see. We lost Suits, we lost Suits: LA, and that has kind of left nothing for scripted tv. So it feels like this has been a long time coming. And after watching the first episode of this one, I’m thinking they have made the right decision. It was everything I would have expected and more from John Grisham and personally, I can’t wait to see what happens next. I feel like they did a great job hitting the ground running and throwing a lot at us to keep us hooked. Which certainly worked well on me! So keep reading for my review of The Rainmaker 1×01!
Dynamic Duo
Okay, they got me with Rudy and Sarah right out of the damn gates. I hate to admit that I’m already invested because I do my best not to get too invested too quickly. But they got me with the hook with these two. They had great personalities and charisma from their first moments on screen. And the chemistry between them from the first interaction was clear. Add to that getting a steamy kiss over the bar within the first ten minutes and you totally got me. I’m already rooting for the two of them even though I know there is going to be nothing but turmoil. Especially when a couple is starting off a show already together. They’re just setting us up for heartbreak. That may come sooner than expected.

Sarah and Rudy were a great match every moment they were on the screen. And also formidable. I love that they started their new jobs as counselors together in the same firm. When they were faced with being asked their opinions in front of everyone, including their boss who has a reputation that precedes him, I appreciated that they didn’t automatically take the same side. If their relationship is going to work with both of them as lawyers, they’re going to need to be okay with being on different sides. Especially if they aren’t going to be in the same law firm for more than that first day. Though things didn’t look like they were on solid ground by the end of the episode.
First Day Sendoff
They certainly didn’t waste any time giving us family drama. The tension between Rudy and his mother was palpable and I can’t wait to learn more about their backstory and issues. Rudy clearly didn’t take too kindly to Hank taking advantage and freeloading off his mother. And he also didn’t act like this had been the first time his mother had been in this situation if the way he attempted to tell Hank to pack his shit and leave was any indication. But I did not expect Hank to come at him and throw a solid punch. What a great way for Rudy to start his first day. A bloodied lip and a ruined suit.
While this start clearly had him flustered, Rudy still didn’t hesitate to take on Leo Drummond and make an argument as requested. If there were any doubts about what kind of lawyer he is going to be, that sure went a long way toward showing he has no intention of messing around or backing down. And again brings me back to the history with his mother. Rudy seems very knowledgeable about domestic violence, which leads me to believe he’s experienced plenty. I respected the way he handled the situation. And I appreciated even more that Rudy knew he wasn’t meant to work in Drummond’s firm and set out to find somewhere a bit different after Drummond couldn’t handle being disagreed with.
Find A Way
I’m here for Lana Parrilla being a barracuda of a lawyer who is on the right side of things. It was instantly clear Jocelyn and Rudy were going to be a seriously bad ass team. And that Jocelyn had more than earned the nickname ‘Bruiser’. So we have characters and the story. The characters have given us a peek at a few of their layers and the story is full of complex dynamics and more questions than answers. We have a whole lot of heart and a ton of conflicts and areas of intrigue. The heart made us feel all the things and the areas of interest had us eager for more. And then we had the case. Which was a great one to kick things off with and they did a great job leaving us with just the beginnings of it. The fun has just begun!
