‘Murder in a Small Town’ 1×04 Review: “Prized Possessions”

What a reunion we got to see! Smallville fans were cheering while watching Erica Durance and Kristin Kreuk back on the screen together! Or maybe that was just me. And okay, they didn’t really have many scenes together in Smallville. And maybe the ones they did they didn’t really talk. Or talk at all. But it still made my fangirl heart happy anyway. Plus, it was just nice to see Erica Durance back on my screen! And in the middle of a murder, no less. And we had Cassandra and Karl closer than ever. As they freaking should be. Along with Holly coming to stay with Karl after getting kicked out of school for smoking pot. Yikes. So keep reading for my Murder in a Small Town 1×04 review!

As They Should Be

After the strangeness between them last episode, this episode had Karl and Cass exactly where they are meant to be. Together and as in love as ever. Though it seems the episodes somehow got out of order. So I’m just going to ignore their interactions from last time as I replay the ones  from this episode over and over again. Because they were just so freaking cute I almost couldn’t take it. The look that Karl gave Cass when he found her asleep on the couch was more than a little swoon-worthy. And Cass immediately asking what she could do to help with the investigation showed how far they have come in their relationship. And with Cassandra’s understanding of Karl’s job and what he needs to do in order to do it right.

I freaking loved the way Karl stood up for his team. Blake acted as if he was so much better than the entire police force and he wanted Edwina punished just because Emma overheard them talking and didn’t like what they said. At a crime scene where she shouldn’t have been in the first place. I appreciated that Edwina was willing to speak with Blake and accept his wrath, Karl wasn’t about that. He didn’t hesitate to stand up for her and speak with Blake to let him know where he stands when it comes to his people. And I can’t help but mention once again how much I am loving the friendship between Sid and Karl. I’m so glad that Karl has such great backup. And I love seeing more and more of this team and how they work together.

What Just Happened

The beginning of the episode definitely did imply that Emma killed her husband. But she was so good at acting surprised, that she had me  convinced that I didn’t see what I thought I did. And then it came out that I didn’t see what I thought. But I felt all that confusion because this show has gotten so good with the red herrings. It always has me thinking nothing is ever as it seems. But then there are times where the answer really is as right in front of us as the show makes it seem. Which is just part of what makes it so freaking good. And part of why I am loving every episode. You genuinely just never know what is going to happen. And that’s rare for me to find in a show these days.

Okay, so apparently Emma didn’t shoot Charlie when she aimed the gun at him. She just shot a bullet into the wall. Or so she said. It also does have to be said that Emma was very strange acting. I just didn’t quite know what to make of her. Sometimes she seemed like your typical vain mean girl. But then other times she came off as cunning and almost as if she was putting on a façade. Also, she was very strangely obsessed with cleaning her house. Though it seemed none of that mattered since Charlie apparently faked his death. But don’t worry, there was a murder since Charlie and Tonya ended up killing Blake! What a twist! And in the end, Karl and the team figured it all out and Karl came to Charlie’s rescue.

Young Mistakes

I understand that Holly shouldn’t have been smoking pot at school. But I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the first time. Because if she was kicked out of school for getting caught once, that seems more than a little ridiculous to me. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of a warning these days? Jeez. And she seemed so upset about the entire situation that I couldn’t help but feel bad for her. So I appreciated Sid speaking up and telling Karl she was clearly going through something. Because she definitely was. And it was time for them to have a conversation, clearly. It seemed like maybe it was way past time to be honest. But they figured things out and I hope Holly sticks around for a while so they can keep figuring them out.
