‘High Potential’ 1×04 Review: “Survival Mode”

Things got tense for Morgan when she desperately tries to help a woman find her two missing daughters. But things get convoluted real quick when the girls’ father, who was their prime suspect, turns up dead. Then the pool of suspects just keeps getting bigger and wider. At least, as far as Morgan is concerned. Because everyone else seems to turn their suspicions to the girls’ mother as orchestrating the entire thing. But Morgan remains convinced that isn’t the case and refuses to give up until she gets to the truth. So keep reading for my High Potential 1×04 review!

Close to Home

I understand why Morgan was so adamant about finding the girls. And I understand why she so desperately didn’t want to believe that it was Mia who was responsible for taking the girls. As a mother herself, it was clear what thoughts were running through her head. And I can understand how she couldn’t help but think about how she would be feeling or what she would be doing if it had been one of her children. So her desperation made sense along with her sense of urgency in figuring things out. I did get a little concerned for her when she seemed determined to prove Mia’s innocence because I thought maybe she was letting her own feelings impede her judgment. But she didn’t end up being wrong in the end. So I guess we all need to trust her a bit more.

And while we don’t see Ludo a lot, I feel like we really got the opportunity to appreciate him in the moments we did see him in this episode. Along with appreciating the relationship that he and Morgan are able to have. When she can’t be with her kids, she knows that they are with someone who loves them just as much as she does. Someone who is always going to do his absolute best to take care of them. And on top of that, he really genuinely does understand how Morgan’s brain works and what she needs sometimes. There is something extra special about them being able to remain as close as they do after ending their romantic relationship. They are the epitome of co-parenting and their friendship is a beautiful thing.

So Many Suspects

From the moment we met Mia, I was right there with her thinking that her ex had taken the kids. It’s not an unheard of situation and is actually unfortunately more common than many would think. But it also seemed to make sense with Wendell’s behaviors that Mia and her father were describing. Though it did give me pause because that was right from the jump and I didn’t think they were going to provide us with the answer that quickly. There had to be more to the story than that. Which was made clear when Wendell’s body was found thanks to Morgan and the incredible way her brain works and how she sees things. So then it was not just about who took the girls, it was about who killed Wendell and why.

And that’s when things got really hairy. I pretty much started suspecting everyone. From Mia herself to Mia’s father and everyone in between that was involved with the family. And Adam and the others also started seeing the clues pointing in Mia’s direction. She certainly didn’t help her own case any by taking off and going radio silent. But in the end, I will say that even with everyone I was suspecting, I still didn’t have any idea that it was going to turn out to be Curtis. And I didn’t see his motive until Morgan pulled it all together and explained it to the team. Once again proving that Morgan and Adam are an amazing team and they complement each other perfectly with their different skill sets.

Trust

I really appreciated that Morgan chose to trust Adam when she needed him. And when she knew that she couldn’t help Mia and her girls without his help. But Adam also trusted Morgan. I have no doubt that before he met her, if someone else had put him in that position, he would have listened to his instincts and called for backup. It wouldn’t have mattered what anyone was telling him, he would have been by the book. But because it was Morgan asking, he made the decision to trust her and more than that, to follow her lead. And it really had me appreciating how far their partnership has come already. Plus, he also tried to take the fall for her with Soto by saying it was his call not to call for backup. She totally knew that was crap, but she let him get away with it.

  1. This episode went off the rails when Morgan “examines” the “burned out” car. No way would a car that has recently been on fire be cool enough to get inside. And no way would the interior still be in good shape. C’mon, script writers! You can do better.
