‘Chicago Fire’ 13×01 Review: “A Monster in the Field”

Can you believe we are in the thirteenth season of this show?! Because it feels like it was just beginning to me. But I was definitely ready for this one to make it’s return. I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite of all the Chicago series. And this season premiere certainly had a lot going on! We have a new chief in play, Lyla settling into the firehouse a bit more, and plenty of drama! Plus my Stellaride loving heart was kept pretty happy as an added bonus. It’s always a good episode when I get to see Severide and Stella take a moment for just the two of them. Even when it is literally just a moment. So keep reading for my Chicago Fire 13×01 review!

New Chief in the House

Okay, I don’t love that Boden is gone. Not even a little bit. As a matter of fact, I kind of hate it. But I do appreciate that he left in order to go be commissioner. That is a pretty reasonable move for a man with his reputation. And I can’t think of anyone who would possibly be better suited for that position. Plus, I’m hoping with that move we will be able to see him every once in a while. Or at the very least, hear about him being involved with things from afar. He had a way of supporting everyone in the house while also never backing down or being afraid to call them on their crap when they were being stupid. Definitely some big shoes to fill.

As far as Dom goes, I’m on the fence. I love Dermot Mulroney and I’m stoked to have him joining the cast. But I’m not sure how well he is going to be able to lead the team. Especially since he is definitely coming in hot and I don’t think that is the right approach to the team. Give them some space and understanding. You can’t just come in and make demands. Or, maybe you can. But you shouldn’t. I’m actually shocked that Stella was more concerned about the new captain than Severide. I guess it goes to show that he really has mellowed a bit over the years. Because he would have been the first one calling the new captain out and rebelling against his orders. Instead, he was doing everything asked and also encouraging Stella to do the same.

A Little Unsteady

I don’t know how to feel about Violet and Carver. It’s hard when someone says they don’t want a relationship and then turn around and change their minds. I know that Violet didn’t mean to jerk Carver around and she was really speaking from a place of fear. But she also has to understand that if she tells him it isn’t going to happen after he tells her he loves her, it’s going to put the man down a little bit. So of course he went and found a rebound. And I’m not surprised that he went back to drowning himself in alcohol, either. The man is heartbroken and trying to convince himself that he’s fine. So here’s to hoping that he and Violet can figure things out, be honest with each other, and give their relationship a real shot.

The other relationship that I’m rooting for is Lyla and Damon. Maybe I shouldn’t be. But I totally am. Even though I get why Lyla isn’t exactly on board at first, I do think she seems interested in Damon. And let’s be honest, there is romance all over this firehouse all the time. In one way or another, it’s just part of what happens. Am I saying it’s always a good idea? No. As a matter of fact, it’s usually a disaster in at least one way. But that’s also part of what I’m here for. Because who doesn’t love some drama and romance thrown in with all that action? Besides Lyla is a total badass with how she handled the entire car crash situation and everything that came after and Damon is a badass too. So they are a great match from what I can see.

Just A Moment

While I wish there were more Stella and Severide moments, I do appreciate what we are given. And it is just the first episode of the season. So I’m sure we will have plenty more as the season goes on. Especially since the conversation about having kids continues to come up with the two of them. I love that Severide is not pressuring Stella and he isn’t upset that she doesn’t feel ready. Oh, how far this man has  come over the last thirteen seasons! But more than anything, I love that he knows what to do to get Stella to take a moment and to just take a breath and relax. But I also feel like Stella was right to worry a little bit since the new chief wants her and Severide to work different shifts since their married. I see the logic in it. But I definitely don’t like it.
