Bond and Song

Book Review: ‘Bond and Song’ by Mera Akiana

Mera Akiana has released her debut novel and when I tell you it’s incredible, that doesn’t even come close to describing Bond and Song. This was a stunning and emotional journey, unlike anything I’ve read before. It was beyond any of my expectations. I got the opportunity to read this book and while the description makes it sound pretty great, once I started it I realized the description didn’t give this book justice. Because once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. So keep reading for my Bond and Song review!

An Emotional Journey

This book was so much more emotional than I could have ever expected. I signed on for what I thought was going to be a YA novel. One that would keep me interested and provide me with a cute love story and characters I would enjoy. But what I ended up getting was so much more than that. Mera Akiana created something so magical, inspirational, and truly heartwarming, that I can see myself reading this book many more times. And I think I will get just as emotional every single time I read it.

I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to give anything away. And I want you all to feel intrigued enough to check it out. Because I firmly believe that once you look into what it is and begin reading it, you are going to be as immersed in it as I was. And it was such an amazing experience for me to read for the first time, I wouldn’t want to take that experience away from anyone else. But there are a few things I can share with you to help you become even more excited to start reading it if you aren’t already.

The Love Story

The two main characters had something so deep and beautiful. And Mera Akiana wrote their love story in such a way that you will find yourself constantly swooning. I know I did. Mera Akiana has weaved together so much heart and beautiful, fierce, and true love. She has a very specific and individual style of writing that I think I could recognize anywhere. Even though this is her first novel. While I am always involved in the stories I decide to read, I don’t know that I have ever been as detail-oriented as I was while reading this book. Mera Akiana just has a way about her style that has you noticing all of the tiny details and absorbing them all.

Many of the reviews you will find for this book so far say things like feeling indescribable. Or feeling something they have never felt before when reading a book. Another popular comment is that the book is a truly emotional journey. And the love story woven throughout the pages makes it easy to understand why people are feeling that way. Sin and Zaja have such a powerful connection that along with the connection to music is going to have you experiencing all the feels.

More to Come

If you check out my author appreciation for Mera Akiana, which you can find here, you will discover that Bond and Song was originally set to be the beginning of a trilogy. But while Mera is planning many more works, possibly and probably still within this magical world she’s created, she has decided to leave this one as a standalone. While I’m a sucker for multiple books within the same world and seeing beloved characters over and over again, I also love that this is a book that can be read without needing anything added to it.
