‘SurrealEstate’ 1×01 Review: “Pilot”
To say I was excited to check this show out would be a major understatement. First of all, I’m always game for a supernatural show. But add in that Tim Rozon is the lead? I’m so there! I’ve been a fan of his since back in his Instant Star days. Plus, I wasn’t really ready for him to be gone from my screen after Wynonna Earp came to an end. So this really came in the nick of time. And it most certainly didn’t disappoint! Right out of the gate, it’s proving to be a badass and formidable show to add to the lineup! So keep reading for my SurrealEstate 1×01 review!
New Team on the Block
Luke Roman is a pretty badass name and Roman Agency has a pretty nice ring to it. This is good since Luke is definitely a badass and so is the rest of his team. Because these aren’t your typical real estate agents. Everyone brings something different to the table and each of those qualities is beyond important to not only sell a house but also to get rid of all the monsters, spirits, demons, and any other supernatural creature that may be haunting the residence. Sounds pretty kickass, right? Good! Because it most certainly is. This was one hell of an opening episode and left me completely obsessed! It’s clearly going to be a ghost story every episode and I’m most definitely here for it!

But there was something more to this show. Something different and fresh. We’ve got plenty of supernatural-type shows to choose from out there. Plenty to keep me occupied, that’s for sure. So if I’m going to add another show to my already extensive list of shows I watch, it needs to show me something special. And SurrealEstate has that in spades. It’s fun and spooky. But there’s also seriousness and mystery to it. And that’s just from the first episode! So I can only imagine what the rest of the first season is going to hold. Though I am wondering if there is going to be a big bad that comes into play within the next few episodes. Something is telling me that’s going to be the case.
Different Skillsets
From the moment Susan walked into the agency, I knew there was going to be something special about her. And I knew it had to be more than her quickly revealed secret to Luke about her affair with her previous boss. Susan definitely said it right when she told Luke that he had an “eclectic” team. Because they most certainly are that. I love that the first episode made sure to give a bit of the backstory while also showing the elemental piece that each character brings to the team. Showing where their specialties lie when it comes to taking care of the problems in a house full of the supernatural was exciting and fun to watch! I definitely liked that each character seems to have a specialization.
Here comes the part where I just can’t help myself in any show or movie. I immediately liked the connection I saw between Luke and Susan. Even though Megan also seemed to be interested in Luke as well. But Susan and Luke were the ones who were drawing me in. There was just a dynamic between them right off the bat and it left me wanting to see it explored more. But if you’ve read any of my reviews before, you know that I always have had and always will have a shipping heart. So I can’t help but look for the love in any show I watch. I’m also usually pretty good at calling the couples if I do say so myself. And I just think while Megan may be sticking around, there is a definite draw between Luke and Susan.
More Than This
There was such a dry sense of humor from the characters and I was loving it. This just doesn’t feel like your typical SyFy show. Though they have been stepping their game way up the last few years. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that feels different about this series. But whatever it is, there’s no denying that I was completely into it. I’m excited to see each case of the week and to find out what the big bad of the first season is going to be. I can’t wait to learn more about the characters, especially Susan and her abilities. But I also find myself wanting to know more about Luke and how he got into this work in the first place. It’s also got me wondering if he has any special abilities of his own and just what they may be.
