‘The Resident’ 4×01 Review: “A Wedding, A Funeral”

The return of The Resident was the perfect example of what a season premiere should look like. But more than that, the season four opener reminded us just how well relationships and dynamics in this show are written. We were beyond impressed. And we were on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. So there was that. But we truly loved the episode and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds! So keep reading for The Resident 4×01 review!

The Ups

First of all, we finally got our CoNic wedding! What could be better than that?! Well, okay, it would have been better if Devon had been able to be there, but we’ll get to that downer in a bit. For now, we’re focusing on all the ups of the episode! Watching Conrad and Nic support each other unwavering was beautiful. Even though we know they always support each other, it’s still always fun to watch. Another couple that is always fun to watch has to be Irving and Jessica. They are so freaking adorable and we love all of their scenes. The private moments between them had us smiling, no matter how difficult everything around them was. Or how much things were falling into chaos.

AJ and Mina! If you say that you didn’t scream at your television when this happened, we don’t know if we will believe you. Because FINALLY! Even though Mina says it changes nothing, we know damn well that it changes everything. Come on, Mina. Don’t play. And if that wasn’t enough, we also had some incredible Bell and Kit moments! They even went to Nic and Conrad’s wedding together! Yes! Our hearts were so freaking full with all the love in this episode. It would have been a huge downer if Nurse Hundley hadn’t made it. Thankfully, her recovery and her performance at the wedding were two of the major ups in this premiere! Thank you, writers.

The Downs

Naturally, one of the biggest downs of the episode was Devon losing his father. And just about every scene with Doctor Cain. The way that he only cares about the bottom line is even worse than when it seemed like that was all Bell cared about. At least when Bell acted that way, there were usually some redeeming undertones. Plus, he’s one of our favorite characters now because he has evolved so much over the seasons. But when it comes to Cain, it really seems like there isn’t an ounce of sympathy in him anywhere. At least Kim seems to have some redeeming qualities. He has a long way to go to make up for what he’s already done. But it does at least seem like he does care.

And of course, watching the families have to say goodbye to their relatives virtually was heartwrenching. Seeing all of the patients with their pictures on the door. Things that they love about their lives. And even though they both ended up being okay, watching Hundley and Kit go through dealing with being sick was terrible. There were many moments that we thought we were going to lose Hundley. And we were pretty worried about Kit for a few moments too. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to all of those affected by the coronavirus.

The In-Between

The way Mina handled that ridiculous patient was extremely frustrating and hilarious. Mina has never been one to take any crap and we knew she wouldn’t start now. AJ calling out Cain was extremely satisfying. It didn’t really change how Cain acted or handled anything, but it was still satisfying. We love Morris Chestnut so much and we really wanted to like Cain. We even hoped he would show some redemption. But it looks like he just keeps getting worse and not better. Another great moment was Hundley telling Bell and the others where things went and what buttons to press. It was sad that she was ill but great to see her still doing her job. We love her! Also, people cheering for the doctors, nurses, and other medical staff gave us chills. That’s what they deserve all the time and not just during a pandemic.

What did you think of The Resident 4×01? We laughed, we cried, and we felt every emotion. Was the CoNic wedding as beautiful to you as it was to us? What did you think of the way the show handled the coronavirus? Do you think there are any redeeming qualities when it comes to Doctor Cain? Or do you think he needs to go? How do you think Red Rock is going to be dealt with this season? Do you think we will get to see Kit and Bell actually dating and in a relationship? And what about Devon? We think it’s about time he found some love too. He hasn’t done so great in that area. Find and follow us on Twitter @capeandcastle to share your thoughts on The Resident 4×01!
