Jeannie Mai ends ‘DWTS’ run due to medical condition

Tonight on Dancing With the Stars, we were originally going to see a double elimination. However, things have changed with the announcement that one contestant is leaving. Jeannie Mai will not be competing due to medical reasons.

In a statement to Good Morning America, Mai stated, “I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we’ve come.”

Jeannie Mai was diagnosed with a condition known as epiglottitis, which required her to be hospitalized. Epiglottitis is a condition in which the tissue that protects the windpipe becomes inflamed. It can cause swelling, which then makes breathing difficult and prevents air from getting into the lungs.

Her dance partner, Brandon Armstrong, posted a message on Instagram. He called her journey on the show “so unique and inspiring.”

On the show’s Twitter, it was revealed that only one couple would be eliminated. Tonight’s episode will feature an individual dance and a group relay.

Mai was in the bottom two last week, but was saved from elimination. Instead, it was Monica Aldama and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy who were eliminated.

Mai was originally was set to perform the Vienesse Waltz in the relay round. The round was set to include Mai alongside Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart.

Now, the group will go on with two celebrities instead of three. The Samba relay includes Kaitlyn Bristowe, AJ McLean, and Skai Jackson. The Cha Cha relay will include Nelly, Christel Stause, and Nev Schulman.

We wish Mai a quick recovery and will miss seeing her on the dance floor.
