Maleficent Franchise

Maleficent and its sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, tell the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain. After her best friend and lover betrays her for the throne, Maleficent, the Queen of the Moors, serves revenge by cursing her lover’s newborn daughter, Princess Aurora.

Little does Maleficent know, however, is that the child of the man who was the worst thing to ever happen to her ended up being a true joy and blessing that she could never give away. Both films display the true meaning of unconditional love between a mother and her daughter.

If the scene below does not make you cry, then you are truly cold-blooded.

Thor Trilogy

Marvel Studios’ Thor trilogy is by far the best movie series to binge on Disney Plus (and in general). Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok unfold the tale of the legendary God of Thunder who transitions from being a conceited warrior and prince of Asgard to a humble, funny, loving, and noble Avenger. If you are a fan of well-developed character arcs, forbidden romances, and a pair of brothers as frenemies, then this is the trilogy for you!

Coco

Miguel aspires to become a famous musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. However, there is one problem – music in his family is forbidden. After finding himself in the Land of the Dead, Miguel makes a new friend, Hector, who helps him on his journey of achieving his dream while learning the truth about his ancestors. This Disney Pixar film teaches important themes of love, following your heart, and making family number one priority.

The Little Mermaid

If you have Disney Plus and The Little Mermaid is not on your watchlist, then why have a subscription? Everyone loves this classic “grass is greener on the other side” animated film! Whether it’s the songs, the love story, Scuttle’s stupidity, Sebastian’s one-liners, or just the fact that you’re jealous you’re not a mermaid like Ariel, there is something in this movie that attracts people of all ages.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

“Hey now! Hey now! This is what dreeeeams are made of!” If you didn’t sing these lyrics in your head as you read them, you’re straight-up lying to yourselves. I think everyone can agree that the song, “What Dreams Are Made Of”, is the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind when one thinks of The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Perhaps some people might specifically think of the part when Lizzie and Isabella hilariously expose Paolo for being a fraud. Others may refer to Lizzie and Isabella’s iconic duet.

Let’s also not forget the fact that Lizzie and Gordo finally share a kiss – the ship that we all rooted for throughout the entire Disney Channel series finally sailed on the big screen!

Aladdin (2019)

Besides the Maleficent films, Aladdin is without a doubt Disney’s best live-action remake of their animated classics. It stays true to the 1992 original while expanding on Princess Jasmine’s and the Genie’s character arcs, giving Jasmine her own “princess song”, allowing the Genie to fall in love, and further developing the friendship of Aladdin and the Genie as well as the romance between Aladdin and Jasmine.

The most valuable thing that we can grasp from this movie is that no matter who or what we are – whether we are a human or a genie, male or female, rich or poor, we are all priceless and are all capable of achieving anything and everything that we set our hearts and minds to.

Captain America: Civil War

Saving the best for last: Captain America: Civil War! What I love about this movie is that there is a lot to take in and analyze. While there are only two sides to the external war (Team Cap or Team Iron Man), many of the characters are also dealing with their own internal conflict.

The most interesting conflict for me is Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow’s. Throughout her entire life, Natasha always had to follow her head rather than her heart, but what happens when she finally allows herself to love the only man in the whole world who actually trusts her – Steve Rogers/Captain America? Caring for someone on the opposite side of war is a tough situation, however, Nat is able to handle it like the skilled genius that she is!
