Hayley Atwell to appear on ‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 7
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will return for a seventh and final season this year and is bearing gifts. Indeed, Fandom Wire has just revealed that Hayley Atwell will make an appearance and reprise her role of Peggy Carter. This adds on to a long series of cameos for Atwell across the MCU and Marvel series.
In addition, rumors have been going around that Enver Gjokaj could also return as agent Daniel Sousa, who is known as Peggy’s colleague and love interest, after Agents of SHIELD actress Ming Na Wen posted a picture about it on her social media. This is some exciting news for the fans of the ABC show Agent Carter which was canceled after only two seasons due to unsatisfying ratings.
Since the sixth season of Agents of SHIELD ended with Coulson and his team traveling through time to 1930s, it is very likely that Peggy and Daniel Sousa will look just like how the viewers left them when the show was canceled.
After James D’Arcy made an appearance in Avengers: Endgame, becoming the first-ever actor to cross from the Marvel series to the Cinematic Universe, it seemed like Marvel has not yet finished telling Peggy Carter’s story.
Therefore, this breaking news raises one burning question: could those appearances be a way of bringing proper closure to Agent Carter‘s beloved characters? The series had indeed ended quite abruptly after planting the seeds of new storylines (like the possible reveal that Peggy’s brother was not dead). It had also finished in a cliffhanger, leaving the audience wondering if agent Jack Thompson, portrayed by Chad Michael Murray, had died after being shot by a mysterious character. It would be great to have that point addressed in the crossover episode — and I personally hope that Murray will reprise his role.
This crossover could also be the occasion to have an Agent Carter revival with Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), Angie Martinelli (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Dottie Underwood (Bridget Regan) making an appearance.
On another note, the news makes us wonder if Hayley Atwell’s return could be an attempt from Marvel to link the show with the ending of Avengers: Endgame and iron out all the issues and inconsistencies that the reunion between Peggy and Steve Rogers at the end of the movie has created. Many fans have indeed shared their discontent with this revelation and have wondered where Peggy’s husband (whether it be Daniel Sousa or Jack Thompson) stand in all this. It would be quite disappointing to have these beloved characters return simply to serve some strategic agenda to patch up a wobbly ending.
Freshly announced, this crossover already holds many expectations (and concerns) but it will certainly be exciting to see those familiar faces again.
