Disney stars land Emmy nods for ‘Game of Thrones’

Disney and Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Gwendoline Christie land Emmy nominations.

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones may have been met with mixed reviews, but that didn’t stop the Television Academy from giving out a record-breaking 32 nominations for the HBO series, all of which, at one point or another, were well-earned.

Among these 32 nods was Emilia Clarke’s first-ever in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, for her controversial, yet iconic role as Daenerys Targaryen. Clarke, who starred in the 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story, has been nominated thrice in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category as Daenerys.

Concurrently, Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams of the upcoming New Mutants film, and Gwendoline Christie, who plays and voices Captain Phasma in the Star Wars-verse, each earned their first-ever nominations as Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, and Brienne of Tarth, respectively, while Avengers: Endgame star Peter Dinklage earned his eighth nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series as Tyrion Lannister. Dinklage is the only actor to earn a nod for every season of Game of Thrones—he won the award for seasons one, five, and seven.

The 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards is to air on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. on Fox.
